15 great and free applications, Mac OSX edition

Today, we thought we’d provide our list of free Mac OS X apps that we’ve found to be both useful and well designed. In the list below each of the apps has a link to the developers website so that you can do some further investigation of those apps which catch your eye.

OpenOffice - open source office suite

  1. OpenOffice
    A great Office suite compatible with and an alternative to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in particular, also offers graphics editing and a database application. Uses Open standards and is completely free to use for both home and commercial purposes!
  2. Adium
    A free instant messaging application supporting MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Jabber and more…
  3. Virtual Box
    A virtualisation application allowing you to run a large number of guest operating systems with Mac OS X acting as the host. Amongst others, you can run Windows (NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and Server 2003), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux, Solaris, OpenSolaris and OpenBSD.
  4. VLC
    A media player which is cross-platform and open-source. Reads most audio and video formats as well as DVDs, Audio CDs and VCDs and supports various streaming products.
  5. Burn
    Burn is a simple but powerful disc burner.
  6. Audacity
    Free to use, multilingual Audio editor and recorder!
  7. Cyberduck
    Great all round FTP application.
  8. Xee
    Xee is a lightweight, fast and convenient image viewer and browser. It is designed to be a serious tool for image viewing and management, with a sleek and powerful interface.
  9. Handbrake
    A multithreaded video transcoder – DVD ripper with MPEG-4 and H.264 encoding.
  10. CarbonCopyCloner
    Clone, synchronise, and backup you hard disk.
  11. ClamXav
    A free virus checker for Mac OS X. Uses the tried and tested ClamAV opensource antivirus engine. Help protect your Windows using friends!
  12. Onyx
    Allows you to perform a host of functions on your Mac such as verifying the startup disk and its file structure, run maintenance tasks, modify hidden capabilities of Finder, Dock and other applications, and more!
  13. QuickSilver
    Use QuickSilver to easily perform tasks such as manipulating files, launching applications, sending email, running scripts and more!
  14. Stuffit Expander
    A free program (click the link for Free Expander) which easily expands and decodes all the files you download from the Web or receive via Email.
  15. TweetDeck
    Update your Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn accounts from one application. Also available on the iPhone, iPad, Windows, Linux.
